Bad Penny

Penny with the new tail design

Penny with the new tail design

It’s a sign, perhaps, that I ought to get out more, but I was ridiculously excited to get my hands on one of these. It wasn’t even in my change – it was the other half’s and he only noticed it when the lady in the Notso Bigtown shop rejected it because it looked ‘a bit foreign.’ We gave her a nice old-fashioned penny instead, and I hung on to the shiny new one.

These were announced at the beginning of April but coins last forever, and besides we’re a long way from the Royal Mint up here, so changeover has been slow. Even so, I’ve been hopefully checking all the coins in my change ever since to see if I can see one in the flesh, as it were.* And finally one has made it all the way to the middle of nowhere and into my pocket. Or rather, not my pocket because I don’t want to spend it by accident. No doubt in a year or so’s time – or down in London already – they’ll be commonplace. But for now they’re a bit of a novelty.

I really like them. I like the idea, I like the fact that they look modern but still have a touch of the traditional about them. I think the design is clean, and fresh and very stylish and above all completely unlike our normal British coins, except for the head of Brenda on the other side. In short, the woman in the shop was right – they do look a bit foreign, after all.

*I’m also the sad sort of bastard who examines all her euro coins on the continent to see which country they come from and – come to think of it – I used to get a kick out the fact that every can of coke you bought in London seemed to come from a different country. It gives it that touch of authenticity, I find, when your Greek Cypriot greasy spoon makes the effort to source the Cokes from Greece as well…

  1. I didn’t even realise we had new pennies – and I’m in London. Maybe they’re shipping them in from the North downwards.

  2. disgruntled says:

Not just the pennies – all of the coins. But they’re releasing them gradually, I think. Check your change…

  3. wakeupscared says:

Wow. I’ve a thing for coins (I’ve a couple of piles of them sitting around the house with the various “special” one-off designs as I encounter them) but I’ve not seen any of these new designs just yet; which is a shame as I like the idea (followed the link and saw the whole set) it’s pretty cool. Can’t believe I missed the whole “we’re going to redesign all your money” thing though; I must have had my head under a rock for a couple of years or something :)

  4. disgruntled says:

I only knew about it because Diamond Geezer did a post about it – the reliable source of everything you need to know about just about everything…

  5. I *really* want one and I haven’t seen any yet at all! And we’re so closer to the mint than you are. I have a couple of 2008 pennies – but only the old design.

  6. disgruntled says:

I can’t believe it. Maybe the Scots are hoarding them all? Nah…

  7. wakeupscared says:

Diamond Geezer eh? (Makes a note : It’s always good to have reliable information sources :) )

I just checked my wallet – I’ve a single, new, shiny tuppence! (How did that get there? -adds it to the pile-)

It’s proof the Scots aren’t hoarding _all_ of them; dashing that old conspiracy theory – I’d better keep a good eye on my change in case any more of them escape my way :)

I came home the other day to find a packet of cigarettes on my driveway. The health warning was in Thai.

Either I am being stalked by a Thai kick box assassin for having revealed your identity and whereabouts or else it makes sense for a local wholesaler to ship cigarettes halfway around the world. I hope smokers are eco-aware enough to keep an eye on their cancermiles.

  9. disgruntled says:

Moobs – Ha! Very Sherlock Holmes:

from the ash on this cigarette I conclude, having written a short monograph on the subject, that it was smoked by a short oriental assassin with advanced kickboxing skills…

wakeup – perhaps they released the pennies in the north and the 2ps in the south and they’re waiting to see if they meet in the middle

  10. Flighty says:

I not seen any yet so I had a look through the shop till today and didn’t find any! xx

  11. disgruntled says:

I’m sure we’ll all be bored of them in a year or two… but for now it adds a little excitement to the day

  12. wakeupscared says:

I kind of like the idea of them releasing the coins in different parts of the country; a little bit like one of those balloon thingies where they wait and see where fate carries them all off to.
Officially though I’m situated around the middle of the country; so maybe I should be stumbling onto more penny-tuppenny reunions than I am?

  13. disgruntled says:

Perhaps we should start a map? Geotag the coins as they show up, & then work out where they were released… although it will probably end up looking more like a map of town mouse readers with coin-trivia obsessions than anything else…

  14. wakeupscared says:

laughs – I like the sound of that – a little like “book crossing” but with coins :)

(You might be right though about it sounding like a map of your readers with coin obsessions – laughs)

  15. Dom says:

I’ve still not seen any of these in the wild, so to speak. Anyway, if you believe the adverts plastered all over the place (in London at least) cash is dead.
