Unhappiness is…

oh dear

oh dear

… a cold rayburn.  We had to administer the coup de grace last night as it was stuttering to a halt. Now all we can do is wait till Tuesday when help will come.

Fortunately we’re going out to eat tonight at least. Unfortunately, it’s for an early Burns supper. I have a feeling haggis will be unavoidable.

Suggestions for non-haggis related meals that can be cooked in an electric frying pan gratefully received.

Fried Egg Butties, Sausage Butties, Bacon Butties. You get the idea.

    Bacon weaving, even…

    Omelette!
    Bacon and eggs!
    Stir fries!
    Sandwiches :)

    Mmmm…

I can see an unhealthy but delicious weekend coming on

  5. Jo says:

Or you could always invest in a slow cooker?

  6. j says:

spanish omelette – separate egg yolks from whites, whisk whites till stiff like for meringue. Fry potato slices (previously boiled) with onions & garlic, throw in any other stuff you want, (root veg pre-cooked) then gently fold egg yellows miked with milk, herbs & seasoning into whites then pour into pan. Cover pan with lid and cook on very low heat for c. 20-30 mins until all solid.

A slow cooker is better than a dead one.
I really think you need another maintenance opinion on your Rayburn. 6 monthly intervals service should do the trick if the engineer knows his job.

  8. PaperBoy says:

Slow cookers are fab – leek & potato soup on the go in ours right now. Effort low, results great.

It could be the oil that’s at fault. Still, we shall see on Tuesday. Meanwhile, stirfry it is…

Chicken Fajitas. One box of Old El Passo Fajita thing, some chicken.
Tacos. One box of Old El Passo Taco stuff, some mince.
Encheladas. One box of… you get the idea :D

I don’t work for Old El Passo :D

You could also do pan fried pork with pan fried veg (do that a lot at home), and if your frying pan is small/deep enough or you can heat a pot you can do things like cook up some sausages, cut them up, return them to the pan, pour in water, add tomato pasta’n'sauce. Ditto with bacon and some of the cheesy pasta’n'sauces.

    Fryups.

    You’ll be fine :)

The Old El Paso kits are a huge mark up on what is basically some corn tacos and a jar of salsa. But your sausage-pasta thing might be a runner.

We’ve bought loads of bacon, as a standby

Pancakes (flap jacks) dunno what they are called in the UK ;-) Sausage, scrambled farm fresh eggs with all kinds of additives, like cheese, leeks, peppers, etc. Pot roast with veggies, beef stew, flat breads, etc, etc.

We went into mourning when our 30 year old electric skillet died! We have yet to find a suitable replacement. The new ones are not nearly as well built or substantial.

I had an old electric frying pan at university and it was incredible what you could cook in it. The new one doesn’t seem so versatile – I suspect Mssrs Health & Safety have had their way with them.

Is this a rhetoirical question? I seem to remember Katherine Whitehorn had a lot of reoipes that you could do in a frying pan in ‘Cooking in bedsitter’ that included pizza…..do you know anyone with a copy? I think she had a primus rather than an electric frying pan, and unfortunately quite a few did involve mushroom soup, but if you know some one who has a copy, they may be able to help out. I do know a few recipes but since they lsagely involve tofu and vegetables I am guessing that your interest level will be below instrument sensitivity ?

  15. disgruntled says:

If the answer is ‘tofu’ then yes, it was a rhetorical question….

Still pizza in a frying pan sounds like it’s worthy of a blog post on its own.

Found me a new electric skillet…if it proves unsuitable it can be returned to any Target store in the country (a good thing with my travels)

BTW it is Tuesday…how did you make out with the Rayburn Engineer?
