…the narrator today would have been intoning:
‘Day 22 of Seedling Watch, and up at the vegetable patch there’s still no sign of any life…’
‘…Or is there?’
Yup, shortly after I really did give them up for dead, my peas and beans have started germinating. So in a fit of more mad optimism I’ve planted my broccoli and gem squash*. The jury is still out on the parsnips though – while there are signs of something coming up, I can’t remember what parsnip seedlings look like so I’m not convinced it’s them and there’s not enough of them yet to make it obvious.
And it’s not just my seeds that are showing signs of life…
*I know you all have zero interest in these details, but I can’t be arsed to keep a proper garden notebook so this will have to do.

I think it’s great. I LOVE watching nature in action and excitedly wander my own garden daily, watching for something new.
I only wish I had more time to photograph and write about it myself.
Keep us posted!
Oh don’t worry, I will…
I’m hoping that my potatoes and onions will have started showing when I next look.
Parsnips can be slow to germinate, especially in cold weather! xx
I keep telling myself that. Still, it’s been 3 weeks…
I must admit to being overly keen this year and have created a spreadsheet to log what I have done and how much time I have spent in the garden…excluding the slowly wandering around and getting excited when I see something new breaking through the ground or coming in to flower
Mmm, spreadsheets. Now there’s an idea…
My spuds are up – planted 9 tubers and have 9 plants…. I’ll let them get some sun for a few days before I earth them up a bit more and I’ll keep doing that until they get to the top of the bags they’re growing in
Maybe we could have a shared spreadsheet on the interweb showing all our sowings and germinings and croppings. Wouldn’t that be fun…………..What?
It might all get a tiny bit competitive though…
Parsnips seedlings look a bit like big coriander. We grew them in the same bed last year and I spent most of the summer reminding my other half to read the labels on the rows…
But if you confuse broad beans and spinach, that’s okay. Broad bean leaves are quite tasty.
I knew you could eat pea seedlings in a salad, never tried broad beens though
