Over-wintering Broad Beans

View from the potting shed

You never know, it might work…

I wasn’t going to do this, but I had a sudden yen to plant things. And start a new page on my spreadsheet for the next growing season.

This has nothing at all to do with broad beans, but I just wondered if you could help me with a small dilemma. How do you keep your salt dry? I have read that people used to keep it on a little shelf up the chimney, but I don’t fancy that one. Do you have any less sooty ideas? I’ve just been keeping the salt cellar on the hearth in front of the fire, but that’s not a terribly clean, hygienic place. Thanks, Lynda

Good luck! I gave up on mine this year as they were blackfly infested despite pitching the tops out and spraying them. I’ll be trying again next year but don’t grow mine overwinter. xx

Lynda – Fortunately for us, the kitchen is pretty dry as the Rayburn is on all of the time, so damp salt isn’t much of an issue. I keep it in a bowl rather than a cellar, though, so it doesn’t matter so much if it isn’t bone dry. Some people use rice grains in the salt cellar to absorb the water but I’ve no idea if that works…
flighty – blackfly is about the only problem I didn’t get this year so fingers crossed…

I usually plant broad beans outdoors about Christmas time. (I do live much further south than you). They seem to come up every year, Planting them at that time seems to avoid black fly. I have left planting them until a few months later, and although they germinate more quickly, they get black fly.

I’m in awe of some one who is so organised as to have such a spread sheet. Our brains must have very different wiring diagrams!

DM – they would be outdoors, but there are apparently mice in the cold frame, so I thought I’d give them a head start. And if it doesn’t work, I’ll plant the rest in spring…

UHDD – it’s a bit sad, isn’t it? I just like to keep track of things and I forget otherwise
