… well, not spring exactly. Spring is a strong word. But there are signs that the year is on the turn: snowdrops just poking through, ground you can put a fork in, vague glimmers of daylight even after four o’clock and the landlord’s hens producing their first egg.
Oh, and the continued production of monster parsnips

I think this is the biggest yet. I’m never chitting parsnips again, I tell you.

We are warmin up soon -we can see tarmac. Not everywhere granted, but enough that I can get my bikes out again.
Of course, snow is forecast next week, but actually I’m not to upset as it gives me a potantial excuse to avoid one of our very rare car journeys…
I think that is going to be the challenge for the weekend, going to the allotment and trying to dig up some of the parsnips. Getting worried about how big they are going to be…
It’s warm here in the south – but very damp. I’m chitting broad beans in egg cartons and the egg cartons have grown mould.
Andy – careful what you wish for!
Kim – be afraid…
DM – we’re not quite at the stage of growing anything yet, but it’s at least possible to imagine it happening
I found myself thinking it was vaguely light and Warburg when I left work today. There is definitely something in the air. It won’t last
Wishful thinking wrt Spring, I’m afraid, Winter only began officially on 21st December, and has a long way to go, with plenty of opportunity for the weather to backtrack to the bad stuff. As far as the monster parsnip is concerned, I’d cut it into strips, and roast with honey.
Dom – yeah, I give it to mid-to-late June & then it will be downhill all the way
Welsh Cyclist – I know, I’m just fooling myself but I like to keep my spirits up. Parsnip was roasted last night, leftovers will become soup in due course.
You could always sell the parsnips to the people doing a remake of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” — they’d make great props for “pod people” pods. There’s bound to be somebody remaking it. Nobody’s doing original films any more. They’re all remakes (of remakes of remakes). Grumble. . .
Hmm – just noticed my phone auto corrected warm to Warburg
Don’t go wishing the year away, you want to be relishing the warm and nice bits of the year.
At the weekend I had a happy hour rummaging through my seed basket, sorting into piles of what to grow now, what needs to wait. It’s your fault I’m afraid, chitting parsnips is top of my February list (a monster parsnip is better than none.) Or maybe you could go into mail order business..?
WOL – that might be the answer
Dom – I did wonder
Emma – don’t say I didn’t warn you!
