If you Go Down to the Woods Today

You’ll find that a few days of hard frosts, fogs, and still days have coated everything in rime: every branch and wire and stone, every blade of grass and fallen leaf, every individual twig and needle.

Until the woods themselves seemed haunted by the ghostly shades of trees.

(not of course that these photos even begin to do them justice; I found this afternoon how difficult it really is to photograph the woods for the trees…)

Ah, but did you have fences like this or this?

  2. It’s tricky to try and capture the magic of woods isn’t it? Just enjoy. I particularly like the avenue of trees in the third shot.

It’s surreal how everything seems more than double size all of a sudden. Grass as thick as twigs. “Until the woods themselves seem haunted by the ghostly shades of trees.” Beautiful line!

I seem to remember a certain someone making comments alluding to the fact that it was becoming springlike not so long ago. It would appear the Weather Gods read your blog and are not without a sense of humour :D

There’s something almost magical when it’s like that so be careful that you don’t suddenly find yourself in Narnia!

yes – I was thinking as we walked home that this year seems to have been ‘always winter, never Christmas’

I did the closeup and looked at the grass in that bottom pix — looks like they’ve been sprayed. I’m sure it was the stillness. The moisture just condenses out of the air and freezes — can’t do that if it’s moving. In the top pix, whatever that thing is on the ground by the fence just to the left of the gate–I did a double take –looked like a body wrapped in canvas with the head sticking out — Ack — I’ve been watching too much NCIS and Bones on TV.

They don’t seem to bad to me, we had some snow in Oxford this morning about 6.00 but it did not stick.

thanks. Glad to hear the snow did not stick around
